A positive mindset has a definite impact on the future of oneself just as the phenomenon of positive thinking dramatically increases your chances of success in any endeavor. A positive mindset turns undesirable situations into good situations. Whatever you expect from life occurs.
For example: When you know you are worthy and an achievement is within your grasp, you relax and look for solutions rather than dwelling on problems. You are more likely to imagine positive situations or outcomes and disregard thoughts related to giving up, failure, or roadblocks.
By anticipating joy, good health, happiness, and accomplishment, then that will be your experience. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Positive thinking may sound like a simple shift in attention and it is; yet it is your mind-set that must be developed.
William Shakespeare once said, “There is nothing either good or bad – but thinking makes it so.”
Let’s now take a look at various definitions of Mindset:
- A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations. (The Free Dictionary)
- A mental inclination, tendency, or habit. (Merriam-Webster.com)
- A person’s usual attitude or mental state is his or her mindset. (Vocabulary.com)
- A person’s way of thinking and their opinions. (Cambridge Dictionary)
As any of my clients will tell you, I am not so much interested in what happens to them on any given day per se, I am more concerned with how they react to whatever happens. Your mindset plays a key role in determining your reactions. It is my experience that the only difference between stepping-stones and stumbling blocks is how you perceive them.
It’s easy to have a positive mindset when everything is going well yet it is those who have the ability to turn adversity into an advantage that are able to endure and attain success in the long run. My work involves teaching clients to look at inevitable setbacks, not as disappointments, rather as aberrations that present life-strengthening opportunities that ultimately facilitate growth.
The average human being tends to become discouraged by setbacks, as if we are entitled to only good things happening to us in our lives, and often dwell on playing the role of a victim. Doing so however, is a choice we make. This is the incorrect way to look at the world and ends to find oneself in a self-debilitating conclusion.
I view adversity as a gift that gives us the chance to work on things that need our attention now, before they become bigger problems that are more difficult to fix down the road. Many people do not realize that most top performers employ or hire an expert who checks in with them at least once a week to keep their mindset on track.
As humans, we all have blind spots, and it is crucial to have a trusted outsider’s view, as they can offer insights that regularly hit the bulls-eye to help you keep moving forward. These check-ins become more paramount during times when things are going well. The reason being is that blind spots are even more common during stretches of success, than in times of adversity. It is crucial to not lose sight of what got you to the triumphs you are currently experiencing, if you want them to continue. The greater your triumphs, the more likely you will be surrounded by people who tell you only what you want to hear and never what you need to hear.
Unfortunately, I have seen many coaches, players and CEO’s fall victim to their ego. When your ego takes over in any situation, it complicates things and leads to poor choices as the best choices are made when things are simplified. Having someone to help you keep your ego in check plays a large role in maintaining a growth mindset.
Most people who fall victim to their growing ego do so because it grows so slowly that they are oblivious to the fact it has taken over their psyche. One of the greatest minds of all-time, Benjamin Franklin fell victim to his ego before realizing that no-one could stand spending time with him. Unlike most people, he was able to finally see past his ego and make corrections. This is a very rare incident and a good example of a situation where an ounce of prevention is greater than a pound of cure.
Recently, I was talking to a very successful coach whom I noticed was falling victim to his ego. He told me he had just finished reading Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography and how much he enjoyed it. Subsequently, all I could think was that it was too bad that his mindset was in the wrong place and caused him to miss the message in the book, that he needed most.
To become one of the most iconic figures in American sports, Jackie Robinson went through the unfortunate adversity of legitimate life threats in order for him to stop playing baseball. Players and teammates, coaches, and fans using racial slurs to get him to quit. Can you imagine?
Robinson had a growth mindset and positive attitude to use those threats and hate mongering as fuel. He grew up in extreme poverty with six siblings, playing four sports at UCLA, joining the military, and while in the military getting arrested during segregation for refusing to move to the back of the bus.
Robinson had heart, passion, and the courage to stand up towards authority in order for his beliefs and dignity. He was mentally tough and managed to block out the negativity as well overcome the constant thoughts of quitting when things got physically and emotionally tough, to overcome and shatter the color barrier in baseball, being the first African-American in baseball.
He was able to overcome the mental abuse he received out on the field and behind closed doors. Robinson had the right mind-set, the right attitude, and used adversity as motivation to remain focused and driven, which lead to success and he became Rookie of the Year.
One man changed baseball and the views of millions forever.
This is a true, inspirational story of what can transpire when you view life through a positive lens no matter how grim the situation is or how many challenges the world seems to throw at you. You are always more resilient and powerful than you think and know that you have the power to truly make a difference in this world. Once you become committed to embracing positive thinking, you will start believing that everything that you want is within your grasp.
You have the power to become as happy, content, or successful as you make up you’re mind to be. A positive mindset has a profound and instantaneous effect on your mood and the quality of your experiences. The bottom line is that in order for positive thinking to change your life, it must become your predominant mindset.
